What is the life of Indian Navy Officer if he/she is married to another Indian Navy Officer, like a male officer to a female medical offi…

Answer by Vikram Karve:

Earlier women were permitted in the Navy only as medical officers and many of them did marry their fellow male officers, especially fellow male medical officers.
After the induction of women in the Navy – the trend of Male and Female Naval Officers getting married in on the rise – owing to a number of reasons like opportunity for intimacy in the workplace/romance in off-duty hours in officers' messes or as "marriages of convenience" etc.
The "powers-that-be" also tacitly encourages such "in service" marriages by giving sops like "spouse postings", "spouse married accommodation seniority carryover" "double rations" "double liquor quota" etc – so you get "double perks" if you marry a fellow navy officer.
Also – a male officer marrying a medical officer has some added advantages, especially getting better "spouse posting stations" where lady medical officers are posted
There is a contrarian view that such "marriages within the navy" are tantamount to "fraternization" and should be discouraged. On a personal front too – many couples may not like to carry their work with each other 24/7 and discuss "shop" at home.
So – whereas – materially it may be advantageous and convenient for male and female navy officers to marry each other – whether – at an emotional level – it is qualitatively desirable – that is debatable.

What can I as a computer science graduate build that would help the Indian Armed Forces?

Answer by Vikram Karve:

You will do Yeoman's Service if you could develop an Application for Military Veterans and Widows to access and manage all their needs, entitlements and requirements online via internet/smartphone in a paperless environment (as envisaged by the PM in his Digital India EGovernance Vision).
At present – Military Veterans/Widows are suffering immensely due to the inefficient, slow and cumbersome multiple Ex-Servicemen's Welfare Systems which are archaic bureaucratic paper-oriented systems and which entail too much paperwork, red-tape and duplication resulting in infructuous efforts and waste of time and resources of all stakeholders – Military Veterans/Widows and Various Agencies involved in Ex-Servicemen's Affairs.
Why don't you contact the Prime Minister/Defence Minister (PM/RM) regarding your noble venture?

Is it mandatory for men to know swimming if they want to join the Indian Navy?

Answer by Vikram Karve:

Non-swimmers are taught swimming during navy basic training and all navy personnel are required to pass the prescribed swimming test before they pass out from training academy/school.
Since swimming is an essential requirement for serving on navy ships at sea – those who do not qualify the swimming test are held back/relegated in the training academy till such time they pass the swimming test.

What is your opinion on corrupt Indian politicians accusing the armed forces of disproportionate assets?

Answer by Vikram Karve:

Sadly – there are different ethical standards for politicians, civil services and armed forces.
Only the defence services men in uniform are expected to be scrupulously honest and have the highest integrity – whereas the common man tolerates corruption among politicians and, to a certain extent, among civilians.
The fact that politicians who are perceived to be corrupt are elected again and again bears testimony to the fact that for most Indian Citizens, corruption is not an important issue and the common man has accepted corruption as a part of life.
We have a forgiving attitude and we condone corruption among politicians and civilians – that is why we see that hardly any corrupt politicians are punished severely.
However – the Military has a "zero tolerance" policy towards corruption since corruption destroys discipline, adversely affects morale and degrades warfighting capability. History has shown that corrupt armies have always been defeated in war.
It is seen that the Military Personnel involved in Scams are speedily punished – whereas the same may not happen to their Civilian Counterparts who often get away scot free or get minor punishments after a long delay.
Sadly – most people do not realise that rampant corruption is destroying India – corruption impedes development and also makes India a "soft state" from the security viewpoint – so – it is high time that India adopts a "zero tolerance to corruption" policy for politicians and all civilian citizens.
